So let me get this straight...

(Please note that I use an over-the-top voice here)

They just.....DIED? The entire (fictional) royal family just dies?!

And there isn't even a memorial service shown with caskets??

I'm sorry but I just can't get over that. When I saw this as a kid that scene scared the hell out of me.

What a cruel opening to a movie...

RIP fictional royal family

Shaun,

the opening moments of the film shows the royal family being electrocuted while posing for a photo of the entire family.

Intermixed with shots of the researchers reviewing the family history, are shots of caskets with the various English and Great Britain flags on them to represent the funerals of the deceased family.

This movie wasn't the greatest, from the very beginning til the end, it's nothing but plot hole after plot hole.

Hope that helps!

If the royal family in this movie is anything like the royal family in our world, there would be about 1600 people in line to the throne before Ralph. The death of 1600+ people is a horrible note to start a comedy film on.

Yes, not to mention that unwed parents do not hold claim to the throne. If Prince Charles had a son out of wedlock, that child nor his family would ever be entitled to royal lineage.

But also, as said above, there is an actual list (You can find it on Wikipedia) of the line of succession. Currently there are nearly 1,600 people. But without these plot holes, the movie could never be made. Suffice it to say, if you're in line for the throne, you know it.. Even if the 4th or 5th person on the list of a thousand plus know they have a minor chance of ever succeeding to the throne.

In case anyone is actually interested, the line of succession is determined by direct descendants of Queen Sophia. (Which is why Queen Elizabeth's husband and Lady Di were never in line.) The order is determined by gender first (men before women) and then age and that includes that individuals entire lineage.

So the Queen's oldest son, Prince Charles, and then HIS sons (William, then Harry) come before the queens 2nd born son (Prince Andrew) and so on. If Prince Charles were to have another child, that child would be 4th in line after Charles, William, and Henry. Barring abdication, it is unlikely we'll ever see anyone other than William and his future children (Assuming there will be any) take the throne.

They should have done a picture with 1,600 people and all of them get electrocuted! That would be awesome!
