And while we are on the subject, why would it be the middle finger? In England, shouldn't it have had the index finger up as well? The punk later gives the one-finger salute to the TV when John Hurt's character is being arrested, and it seemed even more out of place then.

When i was in primary school in the 80's in England the "one finger salute" was a commonplace insult aswell as the "V" so its not that out of place.
