I can only make it an hour in

Iv'e tried to sit through this film about three times, but I can't gather up the concentration to sit through the whole film's run time. Maybe i'm just not cultured or arty enough for it, haha.

The best thing to keep in mind when watching Only Yesterday is that it's not a fantasy like most Studio Ghibli films are. Instead, it's a film that is totally grounded in reality and is a very character driven story about this woman who recalls her past memories as a child and it's basically about her discovering what she wants to do in the future, but her memories sometimes get in the way of things and the film is about letting go of certain things in the past and looking ahead to the future. It's a beautiful and honest look at nostalgia.

I understand why you find it uninteresting as nothing exciting technically happens throughout the entire film. I love it because of how relatable, realistic and three-dimensional the main character, Taeko is. I always get wrapped in her life because of its pacing and how much I like her and what she has gone through and is thinking.

I hope this makes sense and perhaps you can appreciate it more on the 4th viewing. I would also recommend you give it another chance because of the ending, which is one of my favourites of all time.

If that doesn't work, well then, it's just not your cup of tea, which is understandable. :)

Then you're an idiot.

Ah, yes! Immature name calling! That'll show him!

It is quite a long, drawn out film and does take its sweet time getting to the point but I still really love it. It's a bit sentimental, especially the ending, so if that's not your thing it's probably not worth you watching to the end.

You just didn't like it. Nothing wrong with that.

Let's be bad guys.

You've tried watching it multiple times at least before forming an opinion on the film which is better than not watching it at all.

I would maybe suggest - if you're still interested in giving the film another chance in the near future - viewing films with a similar tone and pacing (Yasujiro Ozu's works come to mind, but also other Ghibli films such as Whisper of the Heart too). It may also be a film easier to appreciate when getting older, reflecting on one's childhood in contrast/comparison to the protagonist's.

If then you're still not keen on the film, that's completely fine anyway. To each their own, we all have variations in our preferences.

Don't watch From Up on Poppy Hill or Whisper of the Heart. Like this movie, they're "slice of life" films, and if you have a short attention span or are waiting for action scenes, you're wasting your time.
