Where did Martin get his income?
How did he pay Celia? It doesn't seem anyone would buy a blind photographer's pictures. Was he a ward of the Australian version of the state?
shareIn a Cinema Papers interview when the film came out (1991), writer/director Jocelyn Moorhouse explained that in the original version of the script, it was explained that Martin earned a living as a music critic, reviewing CDs, and also had an inheritance from his mother. But this bit of exposition was left out of the film because Moorhouse didn't think it essential to the particular story being told.

sharethe music critic/translation angle is interesting, i think i remember seeing a shelf in martins lounge room with about 300 cd's in it...almost as if they went down the music path, and got the props set up, then decided not to elaborate on that storyline...
shareIn case anyone is interested there is a special Braille code for music. When I was working at a Braille library I was told about it but I believe that only a couple of the patrons actually used it.
