is it just me or was Raphael a lot more calm than the original?
He appeared to be more calm and rational minded in this movie than he was in the original and wasn't as quick to anger in this film.

Well it's about time he learned something and grew up. It would have been poor if he had remained the same immature rebel from the first film. Maybe this was a form of character development.
