Why did the mother get the blame??
she wasn't even at home when it happened, so how could she have had anything to do with it? i don't get it

That's just it. They may have thought it was "convenient" that she wasn't at home when it happened and had the whole thing orchestrated. They had to look at every possibility. There have been cases in the past where people have reported their kids or whoever missing and they were the ones responsible for it.
