Dead Alive vs. Strictly Ballroom?

Many of the characters - the domineering mother, Uncle Les with a bad hairpiece, the whipped son, the Spanish girlfriend - seem to be straight from Strictly Ballroom. I had thought maybe Peter Jackson saw SB and thought "I bet these people would be good in a horror movie", but then I saw that they came out almost simultaneously. Is there any connection?

Braindead was written, filmed and produced before Strictly Ballroom was.

Plus; it had a real Spaniard playing the heroine, not some Australian doing a lame stereotype.
