ONE OF THE BEST HORROR MOVIES EVER

this is definitely one of my favorites, and what i think is one of the best captivating horror movies i have ever seen and i have seen a lot of them.

i have to say that the music is half of it. without Philip glass it wouldn't as amazing as it is. sad that he did not take credit for it till it became a cult classic.

just amazing i just watched it for the fourth time and i must say that its a beautiful movie. i just cant wait to see it one more time.

Yes the music fits the movie ridiculously well. A very well-made movie, especially for the semi-low budget.

"Ehhh, I don't think those were Lincoln Logs"

This movie is really terrible. It is poorly made even for a low budget horror. The music that you two like so much wasn't used for more than 10 minutes at the end. The rest of the movie is horribly silent.

I wanted to like it but honestly this was a poor movie. There was no music throughout, the dialogue is slow and awkward, the characters have no charisma or chemistry. And it's just really poorly directed. 4/10 at the very most.

I must admit I agree exactly with xxdirtynunxx. I wanted to like Candyman, but found it slow and boring, the "sociological" elements contrived, and not a single truly scary moment in the whole film. The characters were indeed flat and drab.

Philip Glass' music sucked. I generally dislike his music anyway, though he has written far better film scores. But his music for Candyman was thoroughly inappropriate, showing not a single bit of connection with the film. What little music there is inhabits another universe far from the film's feel and action. Sounds like he wrote it in 15 minutes, without even looking at the movie.

"you must be mistaken"?

You're both too stupid for this movie.

reply

You are brave to call any movie slow and boring on this site because the inevitable reply is that you are typical of modern audiences who have no attention span. I'll resist that accusation but I really do think the pacing is part of what makes this film a masterpiece. Usually horror films fail by being too fast-paced, making this all the more remarkable.

As far as Glass goes, I'm biased because I love everything he does.

I agree this movie owns.

Too slow? wow, seriously? The movie has great pacing and tension, the part where the main character goes through the mirror in Cabrini green is extremely unsettling and amazing, and it's amazing the director managed to create as much fear and tension when she pops the mirror out of her own apartment. The non-violent non-gory scenes in the movie are easily more tense and terrifying than the ones that are violent and gory.

The movie is amazing because it really does play on all those little unsettling creepy thoughts we block out of our minds to keep our sanity. As well as providing lots of confusing moments to make you feel as bewildered and scared as the main character.

The music is amazing and makes this movie into a real masterpiece. It's easily one of if not the most memorable horror film scores I've ever heard.

Agree on this point, at least. Fantastic music. I might even go so far as to say the score is what made the film so memorable. The movie itself is good, especially for a mainstream release from the 90s, but it's not the groundbreaking masterpiece the users here are making it out to be(the first half-hour is great but the film descends into cliche slasher territory as soon as Candy Man shows up). Too much filler from that point on. Did we really need to hear Candy Man delivering the same lines over and over again to the point of repetition? What was the point besides establishing a catchphrase for the character. Again, cliche stuff.

Move, and I'll sock ya one!

I don't think this film is slow. Like the Eighth Sense, the atmosphere of tension, darkness and mystery increases little by little. So in the end, it's like a mixture of details and the building up of characters, personalities, and a hundred different points of views about the same happenings.

This movie scared me a little too much, lol. I was 12 when my older sister took me and my cousin to the theatre to see it. I was expecting Friday the 13th or typical slasher elements, but I honestly did not expect this. I could not sleep for like two weeks, I kept waking up, I was so scared, I was afraid to look in a mirror, it was horrible. I grew up watching nothing but horror and it shames me to say that this one film made me feel this way......no other film has, lol.

And I have never seen it again.

You will pay the price for your lack of vision

I don't even see it as a horror movie. It's like an amazing gothic romance complete with beautiful soliloquies. It's a work of genius

There is no escape

Og jeez...no matter what horror movie there is always a pleb like you who comes in saying "it's not really horror" as a way of looking down on the genre and a way of making yourself feel better about liking a horror movie.

It's decent , but Clive Barker's The Forbidden-the story Candyman is based on is a lot better.

The movie demystifies Candyman- his name is mentioned in the first dialogue.
Maybe my love for the written word is stronger, because I felt like the setting as described in The Forbidden is far more evocative and eerie.
When in comparison the ghetto in the movie looks commonplace.

The movie also strays from the story in significant ways- it simplifies things which lessens its impact as a result.

The score is excellent, however and Virginia Madsen is beautiful, I'll give you that.

But for those who haven't read Clive Barker, I encourage you to do so.

Books of Blood vol. 1-3 is a classic.
The Forbidden is part of the next three volumes 4-6, which are also good,

In short, Candyman is decent. I'd probably like it more had I not read the story.

It really feels like most people who really love this film either haven't watched many horror films or aren't really fans of horror films. Candyman has a great score, I like Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd in their roles and the setting is fantastic. The pacing was fine until the last 20 mins or so when they suddenly felt like the movie needed to end in 20 mins and we are just left with a rushed, generic and unsatisfying ending
