Lacking in atmosphere

The camera work and post are primitive and fail to provide the atmosphere this movie needed to be taken seriously.

I disagree, I loved the golden age Hollywood lighting used on Virginia's closeups, and the music is atmospheric.

Which he used to be all scary and mean to peoples.

Couldn't disagree more!
This movie is a great example of creating thick, dripping atmosphere through score and sound design especially. I love how it's visually played a bit straight, (though not flat out plain, as Cake suggested there is a lot of great dewy kind of homage to Universal monster klassiks and such,) while all kinds of aetherial decisions are happening on the auditory end. I find it's very suggestive of the supernatural state of mind amidst the backdrop of ordinary life, and connects well to the concept that a piece of fantastical folklore may have some truth to it. A far flung phantasmagory penetrates the very grounded.

The setting is terrific, the concept is cool, the practical effects were impressive but the end product doesn't pull me in. I know it has a fan base but I'm not one of them.

reply

It's chill, you're still cool for having seen it.
