Does anyone know what the make of the boat is and the size of it? It's an awesome boat.

The boat used in Captain Ron changes a bit through the movie. I did some research myself as I love the style of the boat as well.

According to some reports, it is a 1976 Formosa 48. However, looking at the stern of the ship, I might disagree with that. The stern, as shown in the movie has three windows. The 1976-1979 Formosa 48's all had two windows. The Formosa 51, however, had the three windows.

One site I visited said that they used a 1976 Formosa for the beginning (pre-cleanup) shots and a 1978/9 Formosa for the "cleaned up" look.

The Formosa's are all manufactured in Taiwan and are worth a pretty penny. As I'd like one myself, I've done some pricing. The cheapest I've found is about $50K US. Average is between $150-$200k.

More about the boat: in the movie, the coast guard mentions "60 foot ketch" but actually, its a 51 foot hull with an overall length of 56 feet when you add the bowsprit. She is ketch rigged as the mizzen is forward of the wheel.

Now, as for differences in the movie: the round portholes seen in the saloon: they are non existent in real life. The round ports were added on a plywood plank over the original rectangular ports. The interior shots were all done on a stage, not in the actual boat itself. The interior look IS quite similar in my opinion (layout-wise), just smaller. Alot smaller. The master cabin at the stern is just big enough for a bed, in real life... maybe a set of drawers and a tv on top, no room for walking on each side of the bed... dressers, etc... the hull curves under at that point so there wouldn't be "sides" of the bed. The interior teak is very close to what I've seen on the Formosa's. Oh, and about the engine: if that thing DID have a 1200 horsepower engine, it would rip the hull to pieces. The real formosa's have closer to 200 horse, depending on the model.

As I said before there were actually 2 boats used to film the movie, and watching the beginning and end you will see subtle differences.

Oh and on a final note, the WANDERER DOES INDEED EXIST. I've been looking for it for a while now. Last I heard someone down by South America purchased it. I'll find him/her. Soon, I will have the wanderer sitting in my slip in Lake Michigan.

P.S. I love that boat too, and I love the movie!

May the wind be at your back,
Captain Lars

Are you aware that she is for sale?? Go to yachtworld.com and look up 1976 formosa ketch, and there she is. Located in Costa Rica, and for $165,000, she can be yours.

If you get her, you'll have to put up a website with pictures and all! Many of us are curious as to what she really looks like on the inside.

Good luck!

I also love that boat, so i went to yachtworld.com and looked for it, i found it, but found something strange, the wanderer that's been sold has a fiberglass hull, but wasn't the hull from the wanderer made of wood?

The Formosa 48 "Wanderer" used in the movie (sailing scenes) is located in Kemah, Texas (Clear Lake/Galveston Bay). I know this boat's history well, including its use in filming the movie, it's subsequent sale in Florida after the movie, and have sailed it three times in years past. Hope this helps.
