Would they have been happy together?

Cathy and Heathcliff? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I'm not sure
Even tough they enjoyed their company very much and were very close at some point after she went to live with the Linton their relationship changed forever.

There was a lot jealousy and misunderstandings between them, also their goodbye was so Biter and that's what made Heathclif such cruel person on the other hand maybe if they have spent more time together but apart from everyone maybe their love would have gone back to how it started and they would have had their happy ending.

Anyway I just wished that Heathclif had another change of heart and would have been happy with the other Catherine's daughter I never expected he would have been so mean with her.

reply

of course not, both were extremely selfish people.

reply

No. They were both awful horrible people. But it is a shame that they were not able to be together, because by being apart, they caused great unhappiness to the people they married. Edgar and Isabella were basically decent people, both of whom deserved better.

Had Cathy never crossed paths with the Lintons and their pretty things, yes, sure, why wouldn't they? She was infatuated at first sight with Edgar and Isabella's lifestyle and fancied herself a upper class lady, but it was pretty obvious that that kind of calm, routinary life was not enough for her. Juliette Binoche's Cathy craved the wilderness of the moors and Heathcliff, she was a free spirit restrained by society etiquette and, as a kindred soul, Heathcliff would have given her just what she needed. The tragedy here, for all parties involved (I am including the poor Lintons here, I pretty much agree with everything Katherina Minola wrote), was that the oldest brother's wife didn't died sooner. With what-his-face out of the picture, Catherine would have ruled Wuthering Heighs with Heatchliff by her side and most likely be content enough forevermore.

(And I am not even a fan of the couple. Or the characters. Or the story!)

A question for fans of the book: I just watched the 2011 adaptation and it surprised me seeing Edgar act like a huge controlling bordering on abusive jerk. He certainly didn't come across like one in this film (then again, 2011's Heathcliff was amazingly civil by comparison, and his Cathy had no personality whatsoever, so)... which Linton is the closest to their book counterpart?

i think they would have had a very stormy relationship, lots of rows and shouting and making up and torrid lovemaking. they would probably have enjoyed it very much, though those around them might have found it a bit wearing.

reply

Hell no, too intense. It would have been a very unhealthy "happiness". Heathcliff was a horrible person.

reply

I think so..at one point. If they'd married young.

reply

Definitely. The whole point of the story is injustice of the class society. Had Cathy's father lived long enough for Heathcliff to grow up and get proper education and inherit some money Cathy would never pick Edgar. Their relationship would propably always be stormy but that's what she needed.

reply

Yes. They were only happy, when they were together.
