Jack was robbed of an Oscar

I've said it here before, and I'll say it again: Jack Nicholson was absolutely robbed of an Oscar for AFGM. He lost to Gene Hackman for Unforgiven. I love Gene Hackman, but Unforgiven was a not a good movie and his part was lousy. When you think of AFGM, you think of Jack on the stand. When I think of Unforgiven, I think how boring that movie was, despite a stellar cast, and how much better Pale Rider was. Your thoughts?

Although I was not impressed with Unforgiven or Hackman in that role, I don't see Nicholson in AFGM as anything remarkable either, as far as performances go. Yes, he had remarkable presence and gave a powerful performance. But it sure didn;t seem like it was stretching his acting muscles too much.

but then again a lot of the awards given out are questionable, and it seems receiving one is about as arbitrary as not even being nominated. 

I used to think that until I saw a stage performance. The guy who played Jessup made me realize how incredible Jack Nicholson was.

Gene Hackman rightfully won the Oscar that year. He was phenomenal in Unforgiven.

Cruise deserved one, too

I completely agree.

UNFORGIVEN was a great movie.

A true classic.

Gene Hackman deserved it more then Jack.
It's not even close.

Jacks part while great was more flash then substance where Gene had layers & depth to his character.
1 of the few times the Oscars gave the award to the right person.

You are wrong.

Unforgiven was one of the 15 worst Oscar winners

That being said - I think Hackman did a really good performance and even though I would have voted for Nicholson, it wasn't a bad choice

Absolutely agree 100%. I share the exact same logic. After being on a western kick lately (watched Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, Quick and the Dead, Tombstone, For a Few Dollars More) I decided to watch Unforgven. I had never seen it before and saw all the great reviews and praises it got. Well, I was disappointed with it. Slow and kind of boring and the payoff wasn't worth it. I've seen Clint being the ruthless cold blooded killer before, only I didn't have to wait the entire movie to see it. Pale Rider is indeed far better. What an awesome movie. I lime all the other movies I mentioned better as well.

Jack Nicholson was fantastic in this movie, definitely Oscar worthy. The line at the lunch meeting about him being "300 yards away from 4,000 cubans who are trained to kill him and it will take more than someone flashing a badge to scare him" was gold. The cigar puff at the end cemented his point and that is how you deliver a line!
