Colonel not the highest rank, right?

Always confused by Jessep's line

"'Course, my problem is, I'm a colonel, so I guess I'll just have to keep taking cold showers until they elect some gal president."

Yet aren't these ranks also higher?

- Brigadier General
- Major General
- Lieutenant General
- General

Wouldn't he salute to them as well or are they seen are equal in a way?

Surely a four star General is the highest beneath the President

reply

You're right. But you shouldn't be confused; the point of the movie was that he was an egomaniac whose powers went unchecked.

Brilliant answer Justin.... Most military officers will achieve the rank of Colonel (O5 or 06) if they serve 20 years.

Technically you're right.

But the implication is no woman would be promoted above him in the military hierarchy, so it would take a woman being elected commander in chief.

In 2008, General Ann Dunwoody became the Armys 1st Female 4-star General. But again, we can assume Jessup would retire before he'd stand for getting leapfrogged by anyone beneath him, let alone a woman.

Sounds like you are asking about chain of command here, which is slightly different than rank.

Above four star generals but below president are:

The Under Secretary of the Army
The Secretary of the Army
The Under Secretary of Defense
The Secretary of Defense

Note -- these positions could be technically held by generals or retired generals.

Correct, BUT we are talking about the Marines so the Secretary of the Army is out and the Secretary of the Navy is in.

There's nothing sexy about a BJ from Hilary, president or not.
