Why would he say that then be surprised that he was being charged with a crime? Was he just playing mind games?

What he said☝️

Think he wanted to give the impression that Kaffee was just wasting everyone's time "were these really the questions I was sent to ask?" And that he was unfit to work on a military case of this magnitude. "These men are on trial for their lives!" "Please tell me that their lawyer hasn't pinned their hopes up to a phone bill".

That last part made me chuckle 😁
