Colonel Jessup wanted to give that speech long before he entered the courtroom

Jessup had to be smart enough to know that Kaffee wasn't trying to insult the Marine Corps. He had to be smart enough to know that Kaffee was just trying to help his clients get off. Jessup wasn't trying to defend himself to Kaffee but to the entire country. He made the speech because he had long felt that he wasn't getting the proper recognition that he deserved for what he was doing to protect America. Kaffee stirred up strong emotions in Jessup and that made him feel that that was a good time to reveal his true feelings that had been boiling up inside him for years.

No shit.

I wonder if the OP figured this one out all by himself.

I feel like if they did a remake of this movie today Jessup would be about he same, white male with a god-complex type (with perhaps more racist overtones added to his dialogue) but all the other characters would be swapped with a female, a minority, a female minority, or an overt LBGQT+ actor.

In other words it would suck.

Tom Cruise character would DEFINITELY be swapped to be a “strong independent woman.” She’d, of course, be black and a lesbian.

I like the cut of your jib.

They just can’t make movies like they did anymore. Go take a look at i posted in the Training Day blog of someone asking how a remake would fair in todays landscape.
