Roma's Phone Call in the Office

After Roma finds out the office was robbed, he calls someone to thank them for a wonderful evening. It sounded like the person was getting offended or something. Who was he talking to? What did I totally miss?

reply

I don't understand that part either. At first I thought he was calling Lingk's wife, but it doesn't add up. Maybe it was a woman he hooked up with after?

As I said in another post, the timeline for the evening is really odd. Going by the time, Roma doesn't even have dinner with the Lingks until well after 10 PM.

reply

I believe it was Mrs. Lingk. Either that, or perhap's James Lingk's secretary at his place of business. Either way, I'm surprised Roma went to the Lingk's home and had dinner. It would've been late for dinner by that point, and Roma and Lingk already ate at the restaurant

Roma was trying to make a sale. It's no surprise at all he went to their house.

The surprise is Mrs. Lingk went along with it.

Let's be bad guys.

reply

Could be. Whoever was on the phone sounded annoyed and was trying to shut Roma down, as if they were prepared for his BS smooth-talking routine.

If it was Mrs. Lingk, then maybe she came to her senses when she woke up and was on the defensive against Roma's sales advances that morning.

Actually that makes more sense now that I think about it.

And I'm pretty sure that Roma and Lingk were just drinking at the bar, not eating.

reply

I think I remember Roma saying "re-contact James link" as a reminder to himself get back in touch with him.

He also says a woman's name, and says to thanks her for a wonderful time. I think he hooked up with a chic after the sale.

"That is rather slippery of you agent Starling"

A late-night date with some new woman is probably what it was. I can imagine these guys treated relationships like they do the customers. Running a scam. In fact, I did go out with some guys like that when I was single. They were creeps...their only objective was to get sex in the shortest time possible, with the least amount of expense or effort. They were real manipulators with no conscience.

They drank, and occasionally munched on a bowl of nuts that was on the table. Never saw them eating dinner.

If you listen closely, he asks for Mrs. Lingk. She not there. I always got the impression with the problem Roma has communicating, that a young child of the Lingk's had answered the phone. Note how he says "Wait a minute! Wait a minute!", as if it's a child ready to hang up the phone. If it's the Lingk's residence, and neither Lingk nor his wife answer, then that is the only possibility.
