Why didn't they even bother to explain Marina's expression and what she was looking at in this TV adaption of the story? That's a crucial part of the solution in the orginal novel.

I'd need to rewatch to tell you for sure how/when they told us. Almost certainly in the summing up scene at the end.
I don't think so. And I watched the DVD version.
