'A Christmas Carol' movie musical adaptations

Hello, all!

Who here has heard of other musical versions of 'A Christmas Carol' and just how good are they?

One I had never heard of has Basil Rathbone as Ebenezer "The Stingiest Man In Town" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0227561/combined and is only now getting a DVD Release http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005XT2V1Y?ie=UTF8&tag=aintitcool n07-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B005XT2V1Y.

A more famous one, that I still haven't seen, is "Scrooge" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066344/combined with Albert Finney.

This being a Muppet message board, it is more than fair to hear that this version tops all of your lists!

Kelsey Grammer did a made for TV version of A Christmas Carol in 2004, and I know that it was released on dvd, and I have it on dvd. And he played Ebenezer Scrooge, also Alan Menken that did a lot of the good songs in the Disney animated movies between 1989 and 1999, also did the music and songs for this version. And it is still on dvd http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Carol-Musical-Kelsey-Grammer/dp/B000ARTMWK/ref=sr_1_19?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1323569173&sr=1-19 , and I remember like the movie, and it seems that I remember they sang for pretty much the whole movie. If you have Netflix take a look at the movie if you want to rent it.

Mr Magoo has a musical version of A Christmas Carol, too.

I will be your Sherpa up the mountain of gayness.

I always liked the Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol I rate it up the top of my list. You can find it on the box set of Christmas Movies "Santa Clause is comming to Town" I belive.

There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.

reply

Yes, Rich! I picked that up and watched the Magoo special!

I, too, liked the Mr Magoo version, although it has been a long time since I've seen it.
I thought the Albert Finney version had some of the worst music and worst singing ever. Finney was still at the top of his game and was alright except when he sang. But the score was by Leslie Bricusse, surely one of the worst song writers of all time!

reply

Finney is a great singing Scrooge and that score remains right at the top of my film adaptations.

That "Scrooge" movie is intense and great, wild!

Mr. Magoo will always be my favorite Scrooge, even if they do the ghosts in the wrong order. But the funny thing is in that version, it makes sense to do it that way since he doesn't reform until the scene with Belle in the past.

I always cry when he's sitting on the tombstone, singing "Alone in the World" - and earlier him singing it with his younger self reminds me of Michael Caine's Scrooge singing it with Belle. Both are among my favorite moments of any version of A Christmas Carol.

ETA: I also love "Scrooge" especially Bob Cratchit - my favorite Bob outside of Kermit. I just hate Belle being Isabelle and Fred being Harry and Isabelle being Fezziwig's daughter. If she was, wouldn't Ebenezer take over the company? In that version, Isabelle was the only child, so she (and Ebenezer) should've inherit, definitely not making her poor. It's one of many reasons why the Muppets and Magoo will always be my favorite musical versions.

In the thieves scene in every version of A Christmas Carol, "We're Despicable" from Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol always plays in my head. I also start to choke up in the schoolroom scene in every version because of the "I'm All Alone in the World" song.

I have the Finney version. It’s a fave and I rewatch it every year
