WHAT. THE. HELL?!?!

This is on right now on Channel 5 in the UK. And guess what? They cut out The Love has Gone, just like the DVD did!

What the hell do they have against that song?! Its one of the best bits in the whole movie!!! AAAAAARRRGH!! >_<

reply

it kinda makes the crying a bit random.

reply

It makes it completely random. Its an idiotic decision to cut it out.

reply

well they left the song in on the tv version in new zealand, I taped the scene and added it to my english version, so now im all happy :-)

reply

Wow, this really explains the crying at the end of the scene.

Ironically, this sounds the most like a Disney song of any in the film, yet Disney cut it out.

reply

The DVD I have has that song on it. Do I have something rare?

reply

If its a US DVD, no. If its a UK one, yes.

reply

"Love is gone" was not in the original theatrical version. On the 50th anniversary DVD edition, the widescreen version is also missing the song, but it is in the full-screen "extended" edition.

reply

Last week I borrowed the special edition from the library and decided to watch the widescreen version. I had to see it, as I had trouble believing they would be so dumb as to cut the song. But they did. And it simply doesn't make sense. Belle's walking off just like that was way too abrupt. It worked much better with the song, although, to be honest, I think even with it, that scene is a bit off.

Here's what Wikipedia says about cutting out the song:

"When Love is Gone" was cut out of the original 1992 theatrical release as producers thought it would slow the film down a bit, but put it back in for the video release and TV airings. This song was once again cut from the 10th Anniversary Edition of the film released on DVD (widescreen only, the fullscreen version has the song). Two other songs were written but cut from the film; "Room in Your Heart", performed by Dr. Bunsen Honeydew & Beaker, and "Chairman of the Board", performed by Sam the Eagle. These songs were recorded, but cut from the script before filming began. Both songs appear on the motion picture soundtrack released by Jim Henson Records.

I've got to admit that I became very curious about "Room in Your Heart" and "Chairman of the Board", so since I don't have the soundtrack (sounds like I should go get it...) I checked out Youtube and both songs are there.

It would've been fun to have them be part of the extended version, too. I agree that they're extra and not needed--"When Love is Gone" was, especially because it makes "When Love is Found" at the end of the movie and all of the different times you hear the song in the background make more sense.

And when Scrooge sings with her--it's the first time that I start crying.

If you want to hear more of "Muppets Christmas Carol", here's the link for "Room in Your Heart" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpUoT9M_d5g and here's the link for "Chairman of The Board" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX2Vs_rANSI

Luckily you can watch the version with it included on the dvd.
Just a poop its not widescreen.

It stinks that there are so many great songs in this movie,
otherwise I would say this is my favorite.
Mainly for its impression upon Scrooge. So masterfully conveyed
to you through Caine.

Listening to that song reminds me instantly of that warm fuzzy feeling of Christmas.
I am really intrigued to know why this was excluded from any version
of this movie.

Since children with taste, i.e. me, always fast-forwarded the scene, it makes perfect sense to cut it out. However clearly the continuity takes a blow from this so what I recommend is a version where they leave the song in, but speeded up as if it were being fast-forwarded on a VHS. Then the scene will make perfect sense, and be a nostalgic nod to those children whose icky-romance-yuck threshold just couldn't bear it.

reply

I hate that song.

reply

children with taste? what do you mean by that?

that doesnt make any sense. i never fastforwarded the scene and really enjoyed it as a kid and i still do, how does that mean that i dont have taste?
it's a beautiful scene and a tear jerking song.

i'm sorry your childhood didnt involve any depth or emotional value.

it's not even "icky" as you stated. it's so short and all she does is tell him in song that she doesnt love him anymore. disney movies have more lovey dovey scenes than this and what's the point of fastforwarding through songs in disney films? you lose something important when you do that.. on top of this, there's a rat and gonzo alien sitting in the background, it's hardly all serious.

reply

lol so i'm watching the movie right now, and i just thought, wow, if you're going to take out When Love Is Gone for cheesieness, why not just knock off "Bless Us All" as well?
ridiculous isnt it?

it really does blow my mind to find that people didnt like that song....When Love is Gone is so important...it's the reason Scrooge is the way he is, it's the ending of his happiness, there's so much significance to it.

so did you kids fastforward through all of Tiny Tim's little spiels, too? and all the serious stuff? could you just not handle it?

i mean, there's nothing humorous about this story by Charles Dickens. it's great that the muppets are in this version because it DOES make it more kid-friendly, certainly, but it teaches a lesson, you know? if you're going to avoid serious points then why dont you pop in a Monty Python episode instead and just avoid the lesson and go for silliness.

so which version doesnt take out the song, by the way? because i only have the VHS version WITH it, and we've had the poor thing since the video was first released and it makes an irritating sound in the background-- we're going to update to dvd haha. xD

reply

At which part for the movie should it appear?

reply

that doesnt make any sense. i never fastforwarded the scene and really enjoyed it as a kid and i still do, how does that mean that i dont have taste?
it's a beautiful scene and a tear jerking song.
Haha! Um, I was kinda kidding mate. Chill.

If I have to tell you again, we're gonna take it outside and I'm gonna show you what it's like!

reply

lol two years too late maybe?
i dont care, "mate." lol

reply

As a kid I never liked that song, but I can't imagine the movie without it... well I can, but I'm imagining something I don't like :(

reply

the film NEEDS "the Love is gone" and I do remember it being in the theatres, especially when the whole cast is singing "The Love we've found" at the end

Don't look into the Death Star, or you will die.

reply

I imagine the song was cut because it doesn't fit in with the tone of the muppets and the rest of the film, I always find it too sickly and see it as the hand of Disney at work, it is a shame its removal messes up the continuity a bit though.

reply

what Disney should have done is replaced the song with something more "kid-friendly" but that still fit in with the tone of the scene

reply

I still only have the VHS version and I always have and still do fast forward through that song. The woman's voice is just horrible and it is so boring. I do agree that the scene makes less sense without it, though. People should have the choice to fast forward if they want to.

reply

I HAAAAAAAAAAATE so much that they cut the song out of it!!!
Now every time i watch it i just have the fact that THEY CUT THAT SONG OUT OF IT in the back of my mind!

Its SOOOO important in the film to see "the Love is gone", then his life, then to hear "The Love we've found" at the end!

People keep saying they cut it out cos its too sad or too soppy but there are other bits in that film that are JUST as sad and soppy!

Hey, lets just cut the scene where Tiny Tim dies while where at it! :P

reply

Because its *beep* boring.
