When was this movie supposed to take place?

Any guesses? I'd estimate around 1959-1960 or possibly earlier.

I think it is 1955.

It's in the fall of 1955. One can remember in the opening scene in Scranton, Pa. The movie marquee read that Rebel Without A Cause was playing. That movie premiered in 1955.

Well the older Dillion brother who graduated from highschool in 1951 (as announced at the game) is in his senior year at Harvard. So yes it would 1955.

Fats Domino song, Ain't That a Shame, playing on car radio came out August 1955.

In the history test scene, I think that Van Kelt writes the date on his exam paper, something like 12 or 13 December 1955.
