Not a flop

I'd always assumed this movie bombed, but then I read an interview with the producer in "What I Really want to do is Produce"
Chris Hanley produced the film, along with Buffalo 66, Virgin Suicides and American Psycho. He and his partner really wanted to do Neuromancer with Chuck Russell, but this was cheaper and the Japanese were willing to invest because Rutger Hauer was "the Guinness guy"

Anyway according to him production went smoothly and despite coming out during the LA riots the film recouped it's costs and then some, the producers then went on to more interesting indie fare with Freeway and Tree Lounge

So there you go, not a flop. I seriously recommend the book

I've re-watched this movie countless times. With a little more polishing in key places, this really could have been a cult classic. I love it though, don't get me wrong. It's such a great combination of 80s and 90s cliches and Rutger Hauer does a great job in the title role. The creature was also very cool, and shot well.

it is a good old fashion creature feature shoot em up action horror movie with a lot of good one liners spoken by ruger, and a good creature that reminds me of venom of spider man. i have a DVD r copy of the movie that i got at a comic convention and really hope companies like shout factory or synapses gets the rights and release a dvd/blu ray of this movie

Yea, it's quite a marketable film. I'm not sure why it remains so buried.

It only grossed $5.4 million worldwide on a $7 million budget. That's pretty much the definition of a flop.

Doesn't mean it's a bad film and it doesn't mean that it didn't eventually turn a profit from home media sales but the figures are public. It performed poorly at theatres.
