Made the USN look bad.

I understand that the plot required that Rybeck be the hero without help from the SEAL's. But why did the film make the SEAL's look so incompetent by flying in high with lights on so that they were sitting ducks for the terrorists?

It's been a long time since I've seen this, but wasn't the chopper flying in just to see what was going on? IOW, they were not aware the ship was taken over by hostiles, or do I have this wrong?

You have it wrong. A jet goes to investigate early and gets gunned down. The SEALs later go in via chopper and are instantly spotted and blown up with a bazooka.

They were seriously nerfed by the filmmakers.

OK, wasn't sure.

The whole movie makes the USN look bad. Even with the ridiculous stand down order a band of mercs should not have been able to overcome a complement of a battleship's crew. At the very least the mercs should have taken heavy losses.

I agree.

Well, not like it's worth it to really dissect this incredibly dumb yet entertaining movie in these aspects, but Seals aren't exactly the pinnacle of competence in real life either. Big history of fuck-ups, lies, cover-ups, questionable individuals, underwhelming performances and a lot of loose and loud mouths paired with massive egos.

There's a lot of talking going on in the SOF community because of them for a long time now for good reasons and these voices are getting louder every day.

The public image Seals have is severely distorted due to multiple reasons, from simple propaganda, idolization and "regular Joes" mixing them up with DEVGRU, not understanding the difference and thus conflating the two which leads to people think "Seals? that's dem super soldiers who killed Bin Laden!" when they should really think: "Seals? That's the guys who fucked up Operation Red Wings losing 20 Americans in one day due to a barrage of incompetence, false pride and cowardice, right?"

There are awesome Seals, of course, but I am a bit tired of the absurdly inaccurate image they have in public, as if they are the pinnacle of the world's SOF community or something. I know you didn't say that - I just got carried away here. Sue me.
