Who was the real person Sonny was based on?

I know Chazz Palminteri won't reveal who the real Sonny was. But if he was a real mob boss who was murdered, wouldn't there be records? Hasn't a reporter ever tracked this down? You'd think it would be fairly simple to figure out since you know the place and the time in which Chazz grew up.

Was Sonny a Boss? I had it in my head that he was more of a capo. I know they use the term Boss but Capos are called Bosses a lot too. It could be a number of people.

Sonny was a Capo but after Lorenzo confronts Sonny, C narrates 'Eight years passed and as I grew, Sonny grew in power. He became a boss...'

he might have been the boss that was seen most often. [sopranos] like how Uncle Junior was the real boss but we saw Tony do most of the boss mafia things.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

It's not like it was entirely based on a true story. I don't know if the guy was actually killed like that or not. I know Chaz has said the story comes from his real life experiences but I don't know about all that.

Palminteri seem to claim it was a real person who was killed;

"Sonny’s death. Palminteri didn’t witness it in real life, but arrived soon after the real Sonny was killed by the son of the man he shot on the street." http://www.reviewjournal.com/entertainment/truth-behind-some-bronx-tale-scenes

Who it exactly was, or whether his name was really Sonny, I have no idea about.

Yeah I'm sure there was some artistic license there.
