Sinbad's Character at Connie's Birth

So I've seen this movie a bunch of times, but tonight I'm watching it on Netflix and this is the first time it occurred to me: why is Sinbad's character (Otto) at the hospital when Prymaat gives birth? The cabbie/landlord, Khoudri, makes sense because he and Beldar seemed to have a great relationship since Khoudri helped Beldar get a job and place to live and Beldar was his best employee, but Beldar literally jumped ship on Otto when the INS raided them, leaving Otto without his best repairman after all the work he did to get Beldar a fake identity and SSN. It's not that far a cry to think that since Otto seemed to be sympathetic to Beldar's situation (helping him get the fake identity and fit in on Earth, the job, a place to live) that he understood why Beldar had to leave so suddenly and knowing he had a baby on the way kept in touch to see how his favorite employee was doing but if he's trying to hide from the INS why would he correspond with his former boss which could be traceable? And while Khoudri and Otto are the only two humans with which they were amicable at the time, Khoudri lived right there they would've had to call Otto to let them know so it's weird that that was a priority. I know it's just a comedy and their reactions to Conehead birth were for comedic effect, but I can't help thinking what an odd relationship to have with a past employer. It'd be like if I had called up my boss from my days at Toys R Us to my birth (and we do stay in touch)

Exactly. Three of my ex-bosses are very good friends of mine and we do stay in contact and visit when we can. One of them was my supervisor in '84, 95 and again in '03 (it was military - it's amazing how small the Navy is.
