I didn't feel like too many of the jock characters did drugs.

It's not the kind of thing I don't expect jocks to do.

reply

Thinking back to my high school, we had every one of these characters in our school.

The stoners
The Jocks
The Bullies
The Jock that tried to keep peace with everyone
The Sluts
The bitchy cheerleaders

The jocks really didn't do drugs for the most part

Our football team actually had to sign commitment letters to say we wouldn't drink.

We too had big field parties with kegs of beer.

The only difference during my time in high school was the police were relentless in busting our parties and screwing with us in general

reply

Who were the sluts in dazed and confused?

reply

not sure...just remembering what we had

reply

I think Simone or Shavonne seem like the types to have that label just b/c they're carefree girls. Shavonne even said to Simone "everyone calls you a slut" lol.

reply

I consider them popular girls.

reply

Miss those keggers!

In my experience the jocks would smoke a rare joint, or take a bong hit if they were really drunk, but they usually liked pills. A lot of them were getting painkillers from their parents but I never really saw it get out of hand.

reply

The jocks in the movie mostly just drank.

reply

I think the level of pot smoking was exaggerated. One of the less convincing things shown in the great movie.

reply

Almost the whole varsity football team at my school smoke pot and drink

reply

Boy, I thought that was a great thing that the movie did capture about being in high school in the 70s ... everybody smoked pot. Our school in Arizona had

Freaks
Jocks
Sh-tkickers
Nerds
Jesus Freaks
Populars
Specific races/ethnic groups
Those in Drama, Band, Choir, etc...

Well... every single group, even the nerds, smoked pot. And that is pretty much shown in Dazed and Confused to a tee. The other factors in the plot, especially the whole "busting/hazing" of freshmen and the drive to get the jocks to sign anything saying they would not smoke weed, was definitely NOT true for my school. But the pot smoking by everyone, definitely.

reply

Uh.. well at my (Canadian) high school, EVERYONE (I mean everyone, from the most studious to the best athlete) drank and smoked weed. For example I was on the hockey team, and if our coach or any coach said to the team "you can't play if you party" then literally everyone would just quit the team. Although be aware I went to high school in the 90s. It was a lot different. From movies it looks like the "most popular" guys in high school used to be the jocks, the guys on the football team, basketball team or whatever. When I went to school, the drug dealers were BY FAR the most popular kids.

reply

Lol aren't the drug dealers always the most popular kids? I mean even after highschool?

Class of '78 here, and where I grew up (upstate NY), there were damned few students who DIDN'T smoke pot. I'm not saying that everyone took it to a "Cheech&Chong" level, but if you were at a party and it was being passed around, just about everyone there would take a hit if it was offered to them, although I do remember two or three individuals who actually believed that if you got high, you'd freak out and kill yourself by jumping off of the nearest rooftop, thinking that you could fly.

Class of 1980, upstate NY

The classes/cliques were not very rigidly stratified like so many movies portray. Oh, there were the AV super nerd types and the super jock types, but they were relatively few in number. Most of the jocks were potheads and mostly got along with the stoners. Same thing with the band types and cheeleaders: Lots of them were party-ers too.

No hazing, not organized like in Dazed, but random bullying and fights.

reply

I think only two football players were shown smoking weed: Pink and his friend with the green shirt.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

I seem to remember seeing Shavonne (Don's girlfriend) smoking weed at the football field.
