At what point did Dazed and Confused become a classic?

I was really young with this movie came out and didn’t watch it for the first time until high school in the late 2000s decade by which time it was considered one of the best movies of the 1990s, so I wonder at what point exactly did the movie become identified as a great classic film. I especially would like to know so we can gauge how much of a classic Everybody Wants Some will be when the same amount of time has passed from its release date.

I remember the movie being widely talked about by 1995, I didn't discover this movie until right before New Year's Eve 1994 when I saw it on Starz.

It was considered a classic the moment it opened in theaters.

Everybody Wants Some is great but didn’t make the same initial impact that DAC did, plus that little bitch Mark Kermode was complaining about it being ‘sexist’ and no doubt plenty of other critics followed suit - because the men and women in the film behaved like… men and women.

So while culture will try to suppress the film, it will still appeal to Gen-Xers and anyone who appreciates a slice of 80’s college life with pitch-perfect performances and direction.

Linklater belongs in the pantheon of great directors and his reputation will ensure his films are watched for decades to come. DAC will always rank near the top and while EWS won’t rise to its level, I expect its reputation to slowly improve with time. It’s a great little film and the cream always rises to the top.

Usually when a movie/song etc hits 25 years it then moves into the classic realm. Sometimes it seems to take about 30 years for it to graduate to classic status. So basically 25-30 years.

there's a 10th anniversary reunion on youtube. so it was already a classic by 2003
