Something I noticed is that when they were driving to Kate's ranch it was nighttime and they didn't arrive until the following day. Which indicates that it was probably an incredibly far distance that the animals would have had to travel.
shareDoesn't seem like there's any information out there about exactly where the journey started. I checked Wikipedia, the film's entry on the Disney wiki at fandom.com, and a couple of other sources and they all just give a vague reference to "a ranch" as the starting point, San Francisco as the ending point, and "the rocky, mountainous wilderness of the Sierra Nevada" in between.
