I saw the movie when I was like 10 years old and I always though that ALAN and ELLIE were a couple! I'm reading the book now and it says that Ellie is Alan's student.
And JUST NOW I remember that Alan and Ellie never kissed or even hug each other in the movie! So... In the movie they were a couple or not?
They are romantically involved in the film, although the film doesnt suggest that ellie is his student, the novel exlpores their teltionship a bit further. They do in fact hug in the film, abeit when grant finds ellie after the raptor attack. Grant also is annoyed bu malcom when he tries hitting on her.
they also discuss babies in their opening scene , there was also an extended scene which was cut from the final edit where they hug and kiss, i believe this was taken out for pacing reasons.
So given this evidence the film suggests they are a couple but never goes into actual detail about it, neither does it specifically state ellie is his student.

Yes true, but given the other evidence i think its safe to assume they are a couple. Also malcom asks Grant in the jeep ''you to are.....?'' (i.e Romantically involved with eachother) Grant replies ''Yea'' to which malcom apologies for hitting on her.

It kinda looks a bit offputting now considering how young Ellie is compared to Alan.
