Hammond's Line about Isla Nublar

When Grant and Sattler first meet Hammond in their trailer he says "I own an island off the coast of Costa Rica, I've leased it from the government and have set up a kind of biological preserve."

I'm confused by this... Does Hammond actually OWN the island or is he simply RENTING it from the Costa Rican government... what's the deal here?

reply

Maybe he's leasing with an option to buy.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

Yeah I guess that's plausible but if Hammond is as wealthy as he's made out to be wouldn't he just negotiate a price with the Costa Rican government and just buy the island straight up?

reply

Not necessarily. This is a rich American looking to run a project on an entire Island off the south American coast and any mess-up would have reflected on the Costa Ricans. In fact in the book the Costa Rican authorities actually napalm the island to cover it up so what the other poster said about lease with the option to buy is quite plausible.

We have to show the world that not all of us are like him: Henning von Tresckow.

reply

Maybe he did try to negotiate a purchase; Costa Rica probably saw more money in an indefinte lease than a one time purchase.
