What was Malcom thinking in the first T-Rex scene?

Dr. Grant had everything under control by luring the T-Rex elsewhere by throwing the flare away from them. For whatever reason Malcom almost seems like he's trying to outdo Grant with his illogical wit and play keep-away. What was the point of this? What could he possibly have been thinking that he had a better idea?

reply

He was trying to help out. If you listen to him when he gets out of the car with his own flare, he says to Grant to get the kids. He wants to lure the T-Rex even further away, I guess to allow Grant more time to do that. He probably didn't bank on the T-Rex carrying on after him once he threw it away. It was brave, stupid, and lucky (that he survived) all in one, but it made for a great moment.

reply

What you said. It was stupid. The Trex was walking away after Grant threw the flare.

reply

Good Answer! In all honesty it looked like neither one of them knew what to do. I mean what do you do? A 40' 10 ton hungry carnivorous animal just escaped it's pen and took an interest in its visitors. They let the rex topple the car and begin crushing it before making any moves. They were pushed to a point that if they didn't act soon the kids would die from being eaten, crushed, or drown.

Like u said he was trying to help out and after watching grant(and also observing the rex chase the flashlight to the other car) he probably figured the rex would follow the flair. So he thought he'd walk the rex away from them and then throw it. Not counting on the rex chasing him over the flair.

Funny you mention this theory because I heard of it over on reddit. It's funny because I never really sensed any overbearing animosity between the two for him to resort to such an action.

I've heard several other theories including that one (drunk, nervous, etc). I think panic mixed with stupidity might be the best explanation.

The first thought on both their minds was get the kids out of harms way. Malcolm probably figured Grant had the better chance of doing that.

For some reason I think scientists have it wrong with t rex being completely blind

reply

Nobody said the T Rex was blind. What they said was it was sensitive to movement and would tend not to notice something not moving.

Now, whether that is accurate is debatable. Many predators are more sensitive to movement than stillness. I doubt most are completely unaware of animals that stay still. However, I can believe they are going to be more attracted to moving animals.

reply

there is no proof to this, but i have read some lizards will get triggered or adapt to their environment based on movement

reply

There can't be any proof of any behavior for any dinosaur. We can't observe or study them. Everything is speculation. Its not bad speculation as there are modern animals that exhibit this type of behavior.

Complete blindness, though, is extremely unlikely. I see very little advantage for such an animal to be blind. In a completely dark environment it might be possible. There are blind animals in such environments on earth. However, in a normal, surface environment it would not be difficult to defeat a blind predator, assuming all other predators and prey can see.

that's exactly what i'm saying, you net nerds just like arguing for the sake of arguing, i'm agreeing with you and you still feel the need to type paragraph after paragraph check your ego and work on your reading comprehension.

This is how discussions go. You might learn how to discuss things calmly.

My reading comprehension is fine, thank you. You might want to check your own. In many ways I was agreeing with you. There is no proof of any particular behavior because we cannot observe any. We can only speculate.
