Best Dinosaur FX prior to Jurassic Park?

which movies had the best looking dinosaurs before jurassic park came out? can you name any notable dinosaur movies with great animatronics from the 80s, for example?

reply

Nothing really springs to mind other than Ray Harryhausen dinosaurs that were figurines used in movies around the 50's and 60's. This is why Jurassic Park wowed audiences so much back when it was released. We had never seen dinosaurs looking so real until that point. Even in special effects terms it set a higher standard than was there before from the likes of T2 etc.

yeah, i know ray harryhausen's stop motion stuff, also some czech movies by karel zeman.

Probably Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend.

Laughable compared to Jurassic Park, but at least they had an animatronic baby dinosaur costume /puppet that was on the set with the actors. It wasn't just stop motion and blue screen.

thanks, haven't seen this one.

Not animatronic, but if the subject of dinos on screen interests you then you should be aware of Phil Tippet's "Prehistoric Beast." It was done to show off Go Motion and the short film eventually earned him work on the 1985 documentary "Dinosaur!"

As you may have heard at some point or another, Spielberg was original going to use Go Motion dinos in Jurassic Park but was later impressed by a CGI demo and decided to do CGI instead.

Here's a link to Prehistoric Beast:

lolz, love that movie...

Definitely King Kong in the 1930s. Nothing else beat it before Jurassic Park. And I mean NOTHING.

reply

I agree wholeheartedly - although The Lost World from 1925 still has some enormously effective sequences too, notably the stampede scene.
