Bertram

At the end of the film, when the adult Scott Smalls reiterates what became of each of the kids, he says of Bertram, "Bertram...well, Bertram got really into the Sixties, and no one ever saw him again". I've always assumed that meant that he got involved in the so-called Civil Rights Movement, which took up most of his time, so he was unable to part of the team any longer, and then he OD'd on some psychedelic drug. What's your thought on this?

reply

I don't think it has anything to do with the civil rights movement. But the drugs thing is exactly what was alluded to. But I'm not do sure he OD'd. I just think he became a hippy and lived out his older days somewhere in the mountains of Oregon or something.

reply

I always thought that line was so hilarious. I dunno if he od'd but I do think he because a big hippy, kinda just disappeared.

Miranda: Did you fall down and smack your little head on the pavement?
Andy: Not that I can recall

reply

He was possibly killed in Vietnam.

Okay, well... filibuster.

I immediately assumed psychedelic drugs. Never even crossed my mind about the Civil Right Movement. The line was meant to be funny, so I think drugs and a hippie existence is most likely.

By the time Bertram was old enough to start experimenting though, wouldn't the sixties be almost over, assuming he was 12 in 1962, which is when the movie took place.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

The era fondly known as "The Sixties" didn't really hit its stride until the summer of 1969... Woodstock, Haight & Asbury etc.
Bertram would have been 19. A perfect age to tune in, turn on and drop out.

"I can't help but notice that there are skulls all over everything. Are we the baddies?"

reply

The 60s started earlier than that man.
