I’m curious...
All of the kids were apparently good baseball players as evidenced by the beating they put on Phillips and his team. Why weren’t they part of a team in a league? In the 60s when I was a kid (in both a small town of 1,000 population and a city of 40,000) if you liked baseball you were most likely on an organized team.
