The movie makes it seem like he plays in the sandlot the whole time and then, bam, he's suddenly a star in the major league
I suppose the sandlot kids are playing together because they're friends. The same goes for the "fancy kids".

He probably played in the sandlot with his friends, until high school and then he joined his schools team. After he dominated there, either he got a college scholarship, or was drafted into the pros, and worked his way up the minors to the big club.
