... Charles. The other brothers found an outlet for their emotions and are living the lives they want to while Charles, though obviously a very talented artist himself, lost that outlet when he was unable to draw his comics anymore.

That's a good point, he might have needed it as much as his brothers.

I think it was this: He could draw, but it was the fact that Robert was successful at it that helped him. Getting the stuff down on paper wasn't enough for Charles and I think because Robert was successful, that spared him from the same fate that Charles had.

And we do see three lives here, Robert and his two brothers and we see how the parents affected them.
