On the special edition commentary with the director and Roger Ebert, they say he saved up his medication and overdosed on it.

reply

I'm not surprised, that guy's the most depressing person ever.

don't kill yourself.

This was one of the most upsetting posts I've ever read. Then I looked up your profile and saw that you posted something 11 hours ago, six years later. That made me happy. I hope you are doing well.

I didn't find him depressing, I found him sweet (in an acidic kind of way) and funny.

He obviously had struggled for a long time with his illness which was probably not caught early enough because of his overbearing, image-conscious father and incapacitated mother.

I hope he's in a better place now.

Even though people always say suicide is a terrible mistake, in Charles' case I think it was a suicide that made sense. His life had gone nowhere and he had nothing to live for. And we're not talking about a young person either.

But I did feel sorry for him.

Yes, in the film he says maybe he should get a lobotomy and Robert starts laughing probably because he thinks it's such a crazy idea.

Charles: Why not?
Robert: Why not?!! *continues laughing*

They said he killed himself one year after this was filmed. I wonder if the film had something to do with it, specifically, Robert revealing that he had a crush on a kid.

reply

It was weird how he was initially almost as good of an artist as Robert, but then he started drawing with endless lines. The violent bullying he endured as a kid couldn't have done him any favors.
