robert crumb is not a racist

he uses racisiam as a social comment on american culture and he the jokes are almost always ironic. its satire so shut the *beep* up

reply

As Crumb said in the documentary - he only heard the racism accusations from white liberals, who are the kind of people who take every opportunity to display their "moral superiority" over us rednecks.

Many are cold ; few are frozen

reply

Well it's not like he has a large black readership anyway. But there's definitely some racist leanings there. I'd say he was more of someone who liked to stereotype people more out of ignorance than maliciousness. Considering his family had pretty much devolved from a white conservative suburban 50's family life into trailer park variety, it's easy to see where he got those ideas.

reply

Oh, don't be so pompuos mmarcopolo. Their "white conservative suburban 50's family life" may have been conventional but it wasn't happy. If you look at that Angelfood McSpade comic strip in the film it's clearly a satire of how white America viewed black people in the 60s/70s, it shows a trio of white capitalist Americans conning a gullible primitive African woman (this was the white perception of black people) into licking out toilet bowls with the promise of money to buy nice clothes and cars, then they shove her in and she "Ah think I is gettin' *beep* on agin." Very obvious message there.

reply

I think Crumb appreciates black culture better than most Americans.

reply

maybe not racist but certainly racially and sexually insensitive

he really likes old Black jazz records of the past, but his head seemss stuck in racial images of the past as well

We never saw him with any Black friends, but I bet he wouldnt be any different to a Black person than to a White person ( in other words- rude and standoffish)

like that critic said of his sexual comics- it may pretend to be satire but it delves into straight pornography
