What Is That Thing Under Roberts Brothers Bed

I heard that Roberts Brother* sleeps on a bed of nails. In the movie, the camera slightly looks down and you can see "naily sort of things". Is this true or is it something else.

His brother Max doesn't sleep on a bed of nails, he simply sits on it and meditates every day. He keeps the bed of nails under his bed.
