Zazu had it pretty rough! I felt sorry for him.

I'm not just talking about being picked on my Simba.

I'm also referring to Scar always threatening him. In the beginning in the film, he attempted to eat Zazu and would've succeeded if Mufasa didn't arrive :(

He was imprisoned behind bars and forced to sing to Scar when he became king. God knows how long that poor bird was behind those bones without daylight or food.

When the hyenas complained to Scar about having no food, he told them to eat Zazu.

Obviously Zazu has to be very talented in order to survive for so long being led by a tyrant under such conditions.
It seems we come to appreciate his point of view as the film progresses.
We first see him as a somewhat uptight rank and file king's hand.
By the end, we have come to sympathize with his plight and his will to live.

When he was agitated and annoyed by Simba's rambunctiousness earlier, it was because he is a true professional.
He takes his work seriously, making no excuses for unruly behavior.
It's no wonder Mufasa came to count on him to get tasks done, both promptly and efficiently.
We don't see these qualities in him at first, even though he has them, because we are looking at him through Simba's eyes.
To the cub, he's another overbearing adult like his father. Simba and Scar each share the ambition of being king.

Zazu sees right through the immaturity in both these lions of different ages.
Where areas spirit Mufasa represents the divine streets of the metaphysical and is the spiritual embodiment of what is known in the Circle of Life, Zazu is the living conscious of Pride Rock and the inhabitants of the Pride Lands.
