Pop References seem off by ten years

Something that has ALWAYS bugged me about this movie. They're supposed to be 20somethings in 1994. I find it hard to believe that they would know all the words to Conjunction Junction or any school-house rock, OR that they would know all the episodes to GOODTIMES. I think more appropriate references would be 1980s or reruns of that era, which weren't any of those things. Then again, Garafolo's character is fascinated by 70s (Shawn Cassidy poster, etc) - but they wouldn't have been more than six when the 80s began. Just didn't buy it. What I did buy is that the writer was my age. Not the characters.

I know what you mean jonesjax but the author Helen Childress was only 19 years old when she wrote the script, which makes her about the same age as the characters in the movie.

reply

The script writer doesn't choose the soundtrack, the director does....

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I can say that as a 16 year old in 2009 I know the words to Conjunction Junction, as does pretty much everyone I go to school with. Schoolhouse Rock is timeless.
Also, most everyone I know at school is very familiar with early 90s pop culture. Everyone loves Boy Meets World, Saved by the Bell and Doug even though most of those ended at least a decade ago.
It's not all that unreasonable for young people to be familiar with or fans of dated pop culture.
Besides, most of the characters from this film were quirky nostalgics, they'd be interested in older shows etc..

Without meaning to sound condescending, this is a very mature and intelligent post for a 16 year old. As a 'quirky nostalgic' myself, I have to agree with you 100%!

I love this movie... I was 18 when it came out, so the characters are about 4 years OLDER than I am and I know ALL the things you are referring to.

Conjunction Junction? How can anyone born in the 70s not know that? Also, I think I have seen every single episode of Goodtimes (and the Brady Bunch, but that is neither here nor there). I have kids now who are 11 and 9, and they LOVE Full House, though that was on when I was a teenager. They love it because it is on in reruns EVERY sing day, lol. They were shocked to hear that Friends started years before they were even born because they have watched every episode.

I laughed at your comment about Garafolo's character... I have always been obsessed with Prince (though he was also big in the 80s when I was a kid) and I LOVED 70s era memorbilia... It is always trendy to be retro, lol.

So... In 1980, I was 4... Making most of those 22-24 year old characters 8-10 years old in 1980. If I related to everything they were talking about, I do not find it unreasonable.

Sorry for the long, long reply. ; )

Something that has always bugged me is older people thinking that references from "their" era don't live on. As a 21 year old in 1994 I probably seen more School House Rock than you can shake a stick at and I could probably quote entire episodes (an album lyrics) of songs that you feel should be exclusively belong to you and those of "your" era.

Consider this: Most of my classmates are into more Rush than Pearl Jam and think that Guns and Roses new album is the punchline to a bad joke. Even my 17 year old nephew knows more about Pink Floyd than the Jonas Brothers.

Great point. Also, they obviously grew up in the seventies. School House Rock is from the seventies. Kids watch kids' shows! Christ, they still showed tons of School House Rock episodes on saturday mornings in the late eighties and earlier nineties, they probably still do.

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

I thought it was accurate. I would definitely know both as well, and I am that generation. We would not have remembered the original airings necessarily, but Good Times was repeated a million times in syndication in the 80s.

I know the words to Conjunction Junction and i'm 23.

Stuff like this reminds me of "Movie Poop Shoot.com" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

The references were right on for young people of that era (college grads circa 1994). You have to remember that people that age grew up watching the Brady Bunch in reruns, not when it was originally on the air.

I was 23 when this film came out, and dude, I knew ALL the words to conjunction junction, grew up (albeit barely) with the partridge family, and loved, LOVED Goodtimes, What's Happening, Sanford & Son, etc.. The strange thing about the 70's, was that certain shows hung on a little longer, and if one had an older sibling, one might be exposed to the Who or Zeppelin, even though in reality both bands were broken up by the time most 70's kids were old enough to notice. While it might seem at first more appropriate to show reruns of Night Court or MacGyver, the weird thing is, every generation (besides throwing a hero up the pop charts) seems to rebel against the times right before, instead finding pleasing styles and songs from those times before the times right before them. Examples? In the early '90s, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, and the hairbands were out, totally. But by the end of the 90's, after the britneys and blinks and sugar rays made it clear they were temporary, I met kids that were rediscovering whitesnake, ac dc, metallica, etc... Don't think just cause you don't remember con. junc. that a TON of other kids didn't. We did.

I was 18 when this movie came out and I was raised on Goodtimes and had already watched every episode. I too knew the words to Conjunction Junction. So these people being at least 4 or 5 years older than me in the movie would have probably grown up seeing this shows as well.
