when this movie came out...

I was 15. I thought ethan hawk was the hottest coolest guy ever. I thought he was witty, and he was in a band!!!! I am now 28 and I rented the dvd the other night and laughed at myself for thinking that troy was the perfect man...The older version of myself would never give a guy like troy the time of day. The first time he asked if he could live on my couch would be a pretty big sign, that this guy has issues. But this movie gives me that nostalgia for the nineties feel more then any other.

whats wrong with me, because I am still in love with Troy. I blame him for every bad relationship Ive ever had. I can't help but continue to fall for the lazy, musician type-- plus my best friends.

I know it'll never work, but it's like he put some sort of curse on me!

"Saying 'I'm sorry' is the same as saying 'I apologize.' Except at a funeral."

HA HA. I still love Troy too. When I first watched the movie when I was younger I thought he was goodlooking but an @sshole. Now I'm like ok maybe he's not all so great. But now after working in a corporate world I find the portrayal of Mike the MTV guy soooo unrealistic. The guy working for MTV would NEVER be this nice. He would be an arrogant prick ten times worse than Troy. So, out of the two evils you pick the lesser one right? And that in my eyes would be Troy. If in real life a corporate guy COULD be like Michael in this movie, I'd pick him. But that just not the case. He says he is not into cars or money or material stuff. That's all B.S. People in that industry understand money, sex, status, prestige and a few other very basic things. Nothing more than that. So, I say Mike is a pure myth and go Troy!

I am a straight dude, so I have never had a thing for Troy... However, I have always loved that character... A lot of people who know me well say that I have a non-sexual, man-crush on Ethan Hawke... Even my girlfriend says this... And I often joke that I do, too... I have read both of his books and really liked them, etc.... (I don't know one other guy who would even consider reading one of his books... I am sure they are out there, I just don't know them...) Anyways, I would say that it was definitely this movie that really made me like Ethan Hawke... I am 31 now, so I guess I was 17 when this movie came out... Perfect age for it and it quickly became one of my favorite movies... I used to watch it at least twice a year through college and then at least once or twice a year through my early twenties... Now it has probably been like 4 years or so since I last watched it... I'm a little nervous to watch it again, thinking that it may not have aged as well as I remember and I may not like it so much anymore... I'm sure I will get around to watching it again, one of these days... But the thing that I have always wondered is why we root for Troy... I know, I do... I would've hated the movie the first time I saw it, if she had ended up picking Michael... But I don't really know why... He is not a horrible guy in the movie and really treats her nothing but well... (Except for that whole documentary fiasco - which, of course, is a big mistake...) Whereas Troy is purposely a prick on several occasions... I've always wanted to get to the bottom of this, though I doubt an imdb.com discussion is gonna help much... Any thoughts?

I probably still would fall for a boy like Troy. Plus that line, "It's all just a random lottery of meanless tragedy and a series of near escapes. So I take pleasure in the details..."
There are just so many great lines in this film..."hello welcome to winter of our discontent!"
I think this movie has really aged well...or maybe I'm just getting really nostalgic for the 90s!

I think Ethan Hawke (Troy) was/is better looking than Ben Stiller (Michael), but I wouldn't have gone for either extreme. I like normal people, not lazy musicians who reek of coffee and cigarettes, nor yuppies who can't articulate themselves and know few "big" words. Need to note that I *love* musicians (I'm a sucker for a guitar-playing guy), just not slacker ones who are sleeping on friends' couches. However, if I absolutely had to choose between Troy as is and Michael as is, I'd probably go for Troy and try to make him brush his teeth a lot before kissing him. It also wouldn't be an easy choice because both guys are pretty unappealing.

No way I went through the same phase.

Yeah i remember my first time thinking 'washing his boxers wouldnt be so bad' and finding him endearing. And who didnt say something harsh just to get a reaction every now & then?? for all michaels bravado he didnt really know who he was himself and i always thought troy should have had the 'i know what she needs in a way you never will' line.
I went out with a few troys & seriously got sick of paying for everything & making sure he had clean jocks.
That line of his is my favourite tho ...i sit back & i, i smoke my camel straights... and i ride my own melt.

I was 34 when this came out and Troy reminded me of all the pompous English Major *beep* I went to college with (I was one too). Now I'm 48 and I just saw it again and I gave him a little more slack. Because he is kinda cute. But beware, young daughters, of men who quote Gregory Corso and answer the phone, "Now is the winter of our discontent." HAHAH! Seriously if someone showed up at a dinner party with his riff ten years later, you'd want to beat the crap out of him.

Lol... I feel like I am the only one who sees "the real Troy," which is ironic since he is a fictional character.

; ) I love Troy. My first love was a Troy, only more like Troy at the end of the movie... After his guard was down and he let love in. I think Troy rocks.

Troy is shown acting like “a little jerk” at times...

I would like to buy them all a Coke.
