Meant to be a comedy

I think people don't like this film cause they thought it was suppose to be a straight horror film when in reality its suppose to be a satirical dark comedy. When you look at it this way, this film is hilarious!!

You're pretty much right. Director Kim Henkel even mentioned that in an interview he did years back.

But I don't think people being confused makes them hate it. More along the lines of Leatherface in drag, lack of gore, no chainsaw deaths, basically a remake of the original, etc.

Leatherface has always been a cross dresser. Hes worn a dress before and he sometimes puts makeup on his masks.

In the original he has make-up on one of his masks, but I don't think he's ever worn a dress in that one. When he's wearing the grandma mask I think he was actually wearing his apron.

I see it as a parody of the first film. Also a satire on slasher movies in general with the different character archetypes such as the womanizing jock, the ditzy dumb girl, the stoner, and the smart good moraled final girl. Cabin in the Woods owes a lot to this and even has the angle of secret people controlling everything. Yet this is trashed by everyone and the Cabin gets praised for it's wit and originality which isn't fair. If it wasn't a sequel that might not be the case.
