Similarities to Anonymous (2011)

In both of Roland Emmerich's movies, you have autocratic figures (Elizabeth I & Ra) who rule over police states and keep the people under control by functioning as symbolic gods. You then have two geniuses (Edward de Vere & Daniel Jackson) who are basically thwarted and yet it is their knowledge and their efforts of mediation which are able to subvert a corrupt system. Lastly, you have two volatile men (Ben Jonson & Colonel Jack O'Neill) who endanger the work of the genius through rash methods but who are ultimately pacified by them, leading to a successful outcome: the enlightenment and emancipation of an ignorant society.

There aren't even permanent guards stationed on Abydos. To call Ra ruling over a police state is a blatant exaggeration - the mindset of his ruling is similar to the mindset in ancient times, which includes capital punishments for a variety of offenses (Well, the Ancient Greeks, for example, didn't even have the concept of a prison sentence. Prison was where you had to wait for your trial or your execution).

Ra may have been harsh, but he did not rule a police state. He didn't even have a permanent residence on Abydos, nor did his soldiers.

And, of course, what is an "ignorant society" is up to us western saints, and it is totally our call to forcibly "enlighten" and "emancipate" other cultures.

The show made that even more ridiculous, by constantly telling people on other planets that their gods aren't real and that they should reject them. Try that on earth, why dont you?
