The Wife - When did the Affair Start?

Kate Nelligan is a masterful actress, very elegant and her role intrigued me.

Did she begin her affair with Stuart before or after Will was fired? It seemed she was appalled at James Spader for "taking her husband's blessing", but she also seemed annoyed that her husband was kind of a wuss. Did Spader later convince her to hook up with him? 16 years of marriage suddenly down the drain for that jerk?

Any insights? It is also apparent that Charlotte had not made love to her husband in a while, so perhaps it was Will's own fault for sexually neglecting her.

I had assumed it was an ongoing affair but now that you mention it, it may have been after Will was fired/Stuart got his job. When the wife met him in the hotel lobby I think he made some comment about "I didn't realize the job was so important to YOU." or something along those lines.

Obviously had been going on prior to the movie's beginning.

Clearly Steward pursued her (taking his job, his wife, etc).

Would make no sense for her to pursue him (what would she have to offer? She's way older and he's clearly successful enough to score younger hotter trim), meaning would make no sense for HIM to accept her pursuing unless it was part of his power play, which it was. She just didn't strike as the serial cheating type (most likely she was neglected and tired of Will's passive walking dormat ways).

I'm still trying to figure out why Stewart would take up with the old bag; just to humiliate Will further? He had a lot of nerve asking for a favor; "wait a while and let me quit!" Will pissed on his shoes! Charlotte even had more nerve trying to go back to him! Do people really think they can get away with this stuff and "all's forgiven!" I must be a very small person because I wouldn't think twice about it; either side of the drama! Loved how Laura cared watching this soap opera going on! ;-)

Fiero, what do you think of this movie?
I'm getting ready to watch it after not seeing it in over 20 years. I don't remember it but I think I was disappointed the 1st time around.......

Before.

When she and Will were talking about it during the car ride home she said that she had no idea. Will then asked how she could have known. It was passed off as throwaway dialogue, but that was a hint that something was up, even before the firing.
