Is Spider-Man: The Animated Series Still Good?

Welcome to my first retrospective on one of my favorite childhood cartoons. I take a look at Spider-Man (1994 TV Series), also known as Spider-Man: The Animated Series. This is a short analysis of the flaws of the show that I noticed in my episode rewatching. Does the show still hold up after all these years? Let's find out. A review of Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

Spiderman--hell no. The show looked like crap when it first aired. Washed-out colors, boring, outdated character design, tons of footage being reused, and the 3D city effects didn't look good then, either. I prefer either of the newer Spidey cartoons compared to the 90's one.

Revisiting the series as an adult, a lot of its flaws become apparent and some things really haven't aged well. As I mentioned previously, the level of censorship was crazy, to the point that it became ridiculous. No punching was allowed and mentioning of words like “death” or “kill” were a no-go.

The most lame thing, however, was renaming the Sinister Six the Insidious Six because the censors thought the word “sinister” sounded too scary for children. Which is weird considering you had a guy named “Carnage” appear on the show.

Then there was Morbius who couldn't bite people even though he was a vampire. Instead he had these weird suction cup thingies in his palms that he used to drain blood from his victims with. He couldn't say “blood” either, so you had to listen to him whine incessantly about his “need for plasma”.
Speaking of Morbius, I think he appeared way too often in this series. He’s not even an interesting character to begin with, in my opinion. Far too many episodes were wasted on this guy.

Another thing was the excessive use of recycled animation. Sometimes it was kind of subtle, but mostly the repeated animation became glaringly obvious and it ended up looking really weird and out of place.
I know, production costs and all that. But still, it could’ve been better.

And I have to say a lot of the romantic subplots were just downright cringeworthy and felt like a really bad soap opera.

The show definitely had its quirks. While the animation was generally decent, the occasional segues into crude, computer-animated web-slinging sequences stuck out even in 1994. As with X-Men, there was also the constant specter of censorship that prevented Spidey from ever throwing a punch or villains from wielding anything more deadly than harmless laser pistols.

The only thing keeping Spider-Man from 1994 from achieving a higher rank on this list would have to be the overuse of inner-monologuing. As we all know, Spider-Man loves the inner-monologue exposition, and the series relies on it a bit too much. Other than that, the show is great to watch even today.

The 1994 Spider-Man is pretty good… for its time. I wouldn’t have much to complain about the first season of it, aside from maybe the Hobgoblin preceding the Green Goblin. It hasn’t aged particularly well though and from the second season on, the animation got worse, the dialogue and acting got cheesier, and things got a little away from what made Spider-Man Spider-Man at times. There were still high points, but when Morbius is showing up more often than Venom or the Green Goblin, that’s probably the sign of a show with odd priorities.
