Read that, really annoying. In my headcanon they fly away together at the end of Many Happy Returns. They should have pushed it for the final episodes and said to hell with the studio. By 2001 Will and Grace was in its -what- season? No one would have cared.

and it was the finale anyways so who cares what a homophobic studio and homophobic advertisers thought?

Personally I preferred the ambiguity of their relationship. Although the last season of the series, and notably the finale episode, kind of made it seem they were more than "just friends".
