Not an error. This has been done countless times in fiction, film, poetry, etc. A great example is the opening scene to Sunset Blvd. LA Confidential and American Beauty are other examples of this trope.

It's definitely intentional. Hell, his narration is literally interrupted by the baseball bat. He reacts to the pain in the voiceover XD
