Feels like an imitation of Phillip K. Dick

With more in depth philosophy. I loved the idea of the inner "Ghost voice" being the liberator in a day and age where we are all conditioned, although not cyborgs, but in a sense, we're all very programmed. The puppet master is like an allegory for the God spirit--that gives one purpose and knowledge in life.

There was a lot of aesthetic inspiration from Blade Runner in this, more so than PK Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. I saw Ridley Scott influences in its art direction as well.

That should be expected, the film has been compared with Blade Runner many times.

You know how that saying goes: Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Shirow (and Oshii) where definatly inspired by Philip K.Dicks various worlds/ideas.
But there where lots of others, in general the whole Cyberpunk genre took off more strongly in Japan.
I think GiTS has more in common with William Gibsons Novel Neuromancer.

Aesthetic wise it's kind of an interesting case. Blade Runner was actually influenced by 80's Tokyo so it's kinda like the hometown making use of something that was borrowed beforehand.
