John Lennon's Death and daylight in Portland

I've read that John Lennon was pronounced dead at 11:15 PM Eastern time in December. That would make his time of death 8:15 in Oregon. Assuming the radio announced his death immediately after the pronouncement, wouldn’t it be very dark at that time in December? When Mr. Holland was listening to the radio school (if I remember right, the announcement stated “John Lennon died today) and there appeared to some daylight then, and also when he went home. Is this possible or was it the next day?

I could be very wrong about this as I haven't seen the film in a while. But I was under the impression that the radio announcement was simply a "transition" scene where Lennon's murder is brought up through the radio announcement but it doesn;t happen in "real time" in relation to the characters. Mr. Holland may not have gotten the news until the following day where he sits in his classroom in solitude and reverence.
So that everything in the film regarding Lennon's death occurs on December 9th, the following day.

A subject well covered in the trivia section.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

It could be a day later that he got the news. I'm not sure if everyone got it all that night it happened (the anniversary, by the way, was just two days ago). Also, he is listening on the news that people gathered at a park to celebrate his life. Now, that has to be a day or two later for everyone to prepare for it.

People gathered in the park the next day.

I remember John Lennon's death well, as I was watching Monday Night Football the evening he was murdered.

I was groggy and almost asleep when Howard Cosell made the announcement. I thought I was dreaming, and I fell fully asleep just minutes later. It wasn't until the morning that I found this nightmare to be true.

As an avid Beatles fan, I was devastated by the news. I could fully empathize with the Mr. Holland character in this film.
