Was Coach Meister Gay???

I kind of got that vibe since he never settled down with a woman and the whole "tell me some stories about the women you met on the road" schtick seemed a bit like over compensation. PLUS, the whole minoring in modern dance bit.

a ton of football players minor or major in dance, especially quarterbacks. Peyton Manning wasn't a dance minor, but he is known to be a great dancer. Also, every season on Dancing With The Stars, a pro football player does well; Jason Taylor, Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Lawrence Taylor, Michael Irvin, and Kurt Warner have all participated.

I believe Smith and Rice won.

In other words, just because coach could dance doesn't mean he was gay.

The whole world must be a stereotype to the OP. And the coach seemed too roughneck(I can't think of the actual word) to be gay.

He had a new girlfriend in one scene.

And you can add Walter Payton and Herschel Walker to that list of great football players who were also dancers.

The late Walter Payton studied and excelled at ballet. Anyone who ever saw him elude 300 pound would-be tacklers and high-step it for 40-50 yard gains would know how much it helped him.

Coach Meister's sexuality was completely irrelevant, by the way.

the whole minoring in modern dance bit

Oh, for God's sake. What an ignorant remark.

I can see how you could make that assumption but I didn't get that feeling. My guess is he did date, here and there, but his job as a coach kept him too busy to have a long term romance. However, it's never revealed in the movie so there is some room for speculation.

He did marry, remember? Watch the graduation sequence where Jacobs retires. He introduces Holland to his fiancee. As for the modern dance thing, that is like when Lynn Swann, the famous football player, was involved in ballet during his time playing. It worked because the Steelers won four Super Bowls during that era.

There are alot of football players that studied dance. Willie Gault was part of the Bears Superbowl Team back in the 1980's. He knew ballet, and I am pretty sure he had got alot of the team involved in it as well. It definitely helps with posture and balance.

I think Coach Meister was just a guy who loved football, loved coaching, and was too busy to get serious with a woman, though I remember him introducing the one girlfriend as a former Miss Idaho, so he DID date. Gay? I don't think so.

reply

I've always wondered if Coach Meister was divorced.

reply

why is it that if a guy likes to dance and never settles down, he must be gay? And if he actually talks about women... It's a cover...

All good points, but don't forget about his line, right after he told everyone he minored in modern dance:

Coach Meister: "Man, I sure do love me some d!ick."

At the time, I just thought it was a throwaway line. But in retrospect........

I always assumed that he and the drama teacher ended up together.
